Hyper-V Hosted Lab

Requirements

  1. A Modern Supported Web Browser. (IE 10+, Edge 1+, Chrome 16+, Firefox 11+, Safari 6+)
  2. A High-speed Internet connection (>200 Kb/s per user)
  3. If using a firewall, it must allow at least one of the following:
    1. Secure Web sockets on port 443 (HTML5 control)
    2. Web sockets over HTTP port 80 and HTTP over Port 843 (Flash control)
    3. HTTPS over port 443 (Silverlight control)
    4. RDP over port 21xxx or 443 (Enhanced control)
  4. If you are installing the Enhanced control, you must have administrative rights on the local machine.
  5. Have a monitor with a minimum screen resolution 1280 x 960 and at least with 16-bit color depth (1280 x 1024 or higher 32-bit color depth recommended)

Browser/Control Support

Machines in your lab can be accessed using any one of four virtual machine controls. We recommend using the HTML5 control as the optimal control for performance and reliability.

Connection requirements depend upon which control is utilized. Each browser can support a different combination of clients. Use the table below to determine specific browser level requirements

Control Internet Explorer Microsoft Edge Firefox Chrome Safari

1 Preferred client
2 Port 843 is required by Flash Socket Policy to authorize the use of Websockets
3 Requires Internet Explorer. The 21xxx value depends on which host server in the cloud the lab is running on. If connection on port 21xxx fails, the Enhanced client will rollover and attempt the connection on port 443.
4 Internet connections that traverse a proxy are not suppported.

Connection Assessment Test

If you are experiencing frequent disconnects or lag when controlling your machines, you may be asked to run an internet speed check at http://speedtest.nhcms.net/myspeed/html5

To run this test, you must have Visualware BCS installed and running on your local system. The connection test will prompt you to install and run Visualware BCS if you have not done so before. After you install Visualware BCS, you may have to refresh the browser window for the test applet to load properly.

Alternatively, you can run the Java version of the test at http://speedtest.nhcms.net/

You can also test the lab environment directly at: https://lms.nhcms.net/Lab/29330. You will need your New Horizons LMS credentials to run this lab.

Please contact the helpdesk if you need assistance connecting to your lab or running this test.
